Where is my mate?

By Ian Schlien

We were the Kings,
Me and my mate,
We ruled our domain,
And had plans forever.

The world revolved around us,
Loves, and marriages, and children,
Good parents,
And living forever.

The world was ours,
‘Til death do us part,
Mates.

Then there was the drift,
Not in family, or kids,
But, in my mate.

Beers became silent,
No moments of stories,
Constantly reinvented,
Conversations less.

It was to uncomfortable for me,
Wives in the kitchen,
Me alone with my mate,
I stopped calling, him to.

Every Friday, became excuses,
Don’t bring me down,
Hey, stuff happens with mates,
And then he,
My best mate,
Wasn’t there anymore.

Families smashed,
Kids, forever lost,
My friend, left by his own hand,
And I cried.

I now sit at home,
Happy with the shadow,
Of the mate I lost,
Because I loved him, too much,
To risk my friendship to save him.

I’m okay,
But never again,
I’ll risk it all, my friendship ad myself,
To save a friend.
