There were moments

By Ian Schlien

There were moments when the sun would never rise,
The days were worse,
The nights my curse,
There were moments when no-one heard my cries.

But I ran, and talked and walked the walk,
I pushed aside the hurt inside,
I live, but in my head, I died,
My blood was water, my bones were chalk.

There were days that would not end,
I worked my shifts without a change,
My mind was filled with thoughts of strange,
I was alone, the black dog my only friend.

Nobody knew, I hid it well,
I said ok,
Just another day,
My love, I could not tell.

The dreams they came, and stole my sleep,
The sounds, the bangs,
The hurt, the pangs,
Into the pit, I’d fallen deep.

I saw the light, it was a mate,
Where had he been,
For years unseen,
He said, me too, I ain’t been great.

We were the same, hidden in plain sight,
Ourselves were gone,
Another pawn,
Nobody knew, the black dog plight.

We talked a while, and told a tail,
Of being alone,
He too can see,
We suffer lonely, but together, just the same.

But, with a mate to talk and hear,
I value me,
I value we,
I get to cry without the leer.

I’m not fixed yet, more time to tell,
But I’m not alone,
I’ve found a home,
Where friends will walk the road to well.
